Announcement from Liana Buchanan, Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People

News 3 March 2025

The Attorney-General, Hon Sonya Kilkenny MP, has today announced my appointment as a Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC), where I will have responsibility for leading IBAC’s police oversight activities.

This means that, after nine years, I will be finishing my role as Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People on 23 March 2025.

Serving in the role of Principal Commissioner for that time has been an absolute privilege and a great pleasure. I have worked with many inspiring children and young people who have shared their lived experience, wisdom, strength and ideas to make Victoria a better place. I am also grateful to have worked alongside so many talented and dedicated colleagues, both inside and outside of the Commission, who go above and beyond to make a difference for children and young people. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together in my nine years at the Commission for Children and Young People, while also being clear that more is needed in future to protect and uphold children and young people’s rights, wellbeing and safety.

I understand that arrangements are in progress for the appointment of an Acting Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People and that an announcement will be made soon.

Liana Buchanan
Principal Commissioner
