Monitoring preventative detention

How we monitor preventative detention of children and young people in Victoria, and advocate for reform

We monitor the safety and wellbeing of children held in preventive detention in Victoria by:

  • monitoring the treatment of any child, 14 -17 years of age, detained under the Terrorism (Community Protection) Act 2003
  • providing advice to the Attorney-General, other relevant ministers or the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police about the child’s treatment while preventatively detained
  • reporting on our performance of this function and any general observations or conclusions in our Annual Report.
