Following legal action to prevent further publication of confidential information from a Commission report, Nationwide News last Friday agreed in the Supreme Court of Victoria not to publish any further (unpublished) information from the report, to remove an online article in The Australian containing identifying information of a child who is the subject of the Commission's inquiry, to remove from further published articles information tending towards the identification of that child and child’s family, and to destroy any copies of the report.
‘Through its work, the Commission supports, and is a regular and constructive contributor to public discussion of the child protection system. However, that discussion must be limited to the extent necessary to ensure that the tragedy of children’s deaths is not made worse by the violation of their privacy, or the privacy of their families,’ said Liana Buchanan, Commissioner for Children and Young People, today.
The Commission will be making no further media comment on this issue.
