The inquiry report ‘Safe and Wanted’ was delivered to the Hon. Jenny Mikakos, Minister for Families and Children and the Secretary to the Department of Health and Human Services, Ms Kym Peake on 30 June 2017.
The permanency amendments
In August 2014, the Victorian Government passed changes to the Children, Youth and Families Act, which sought to ensure that decisions about the care of vulnerable children are made in a timely way and promote permanency of care arrangements.
The inquiry into the early implementation of the permanency amendments was initiated on the recommendation of the Minister for Families and Children. Our inquiry began in September 2016.
We were asked to review early evidence to determine whether the permanency amendments were achieving their objectives and to consider any impact, benefits and unintended consequences on children and services for children.
Publication of the inquiry
Because the inquiry was conducted on the recommendation of the Minister, the decision to release the report rests with the Minister.
