Community Integration Program

Community Integration ProgramWhat is the Community Integration Program (CIP)?

The CIP was established to connect young people living in residential care with their local community. It involves volunteers from the community getting to know a vulnerable young person and supporting them to connect with others involved in a local activity, group or event that interests them. So far, some young people have participated in sports clubs, spent time scrapbooking, learned how to cook and taken dancing lessons, thanks to the generous support and time given by the volunteers.

Young people who are actively involved in their local communities are more likely to remain in school, get a job and lead a healthy and positive life.

The Community Integration Program Pilot was completed with a final evaluation in June 2014. An evaluation framework, developed at the beginning of the pilot, was used to determine the extent to which the CIP has achieved its objectives.  As a result of the evaluation report, the program has been funded for two years until 31 December 2016, to further develop the program, in the following ways:

  • Developing strategies to increase the number of Koori young people and volunteers participating in the program;
  • Developing a toolkit for CILs to use in presentation and in working with community groups and organisations, to promote social inclusion;
  • Developing additional resources and training to assist volunteers in their role;

Trialling adaptations of the model to improve young people’s engagement with the program.
